GRAPHITE AND DIGITAL

Skylar Dunk works in a variety of different mediums. One of the mediums she prefers the most is a multi-media approach- graphite and digital. This process is fairly straightforward.

It begins with the initial drawing, done in graphite. This stage establishes tone and value. It allows for a more relaxed line, with a good amount of energy. Dunk prefers it to a digital line because it looks more natural.

Once the image is done, it is scanned and moved into photoshop. Here the contrast and brightness is adjusted to make the line more readable on a computer screen. The graphite drawing becomes it's own layer, set to “multiply”. Now any layer underneath shows through, without having to delete the white of the paper. This makes colouring a lot easier. Which of course is the next step. Colour is placed on top to give hue. Digital gives the artist a lot of freedom, and so it works well for this final stage, where the revisions and final edits happen.
